Connect Microsoft Teams

Turn on Chat first. An owner or admin of the Organization starts the connection. A Global Administrator or Privileged Role Administrator of your Microsoft tenant finishes it, and a Teams administrator uploads the app.

To do it yourself:

An owner or admin can also open Integrations > Microsoft Teams in devboxes and choose Add to Microsoft Teams instead of steps 1 and 2.

  1. Start the connection:

    organization.json
    { "organizationId": "<organization id>" }
    devboxes invoke chat.connect-teams --input @organization.json
  2. The tenant administrator opens the authorizationUrl from the result within 15 minutes and signs in to Microsoft with a work account of the tenant to connect. devboxes connects the tenant that account belongs to, so a guest account or a partner's delegated admin access can't connect a customer's tenant: sign in with an account of that tenant. When devboxes asks, they also sign in to devboxes: only an owner or admin of the Organization can finish the connection. devboxes checks that they are a Global Administrator or Privileged Role Administrator, then asks them to consent to the devboxes app in the tenant. devboxes requests no Microsoft Graph permission for the whole tenant: it takes people's names from the messages Teams delivers to it. The browser then returns to the Microsoft Teams page under Integrations in devboxes, which says whether the tenant was connected.

  3. devboxes isn't in the Teams Store, so a Teams administrator uploads it to your organization's apps. Download the app package from the appPackageUrl in the result of step 1, or with Download app on the Microsoft Teams page under Integrations. In the Teams admin center, open Teams apps > Manage apps and upload the file as a new app.

  4. In Teams, add devboxes to a team. Adding it grants devboxes three permissions in that team only: ChannelMessage.Read.Group to read a channel thread's earlier messages, ChannelSettings.Read.Group to read the channel's name, and TeamsAppInstallation.Read.Group to confirm which of these the team granted. devboxes reads no chat outside the teams it is added to, and no earlier messages of a personal chat with it.

  5. Assign a channel of that team to Projects. The channel ID is in the link that Get link to channel copies, and starts with 19:.

  6. Mention @devboxes in a new post in that channel.
