Runners

Add a Runner shows how to register and start a Runner.

Network connections and telemetry

devboxes sends no telemetry from a Runner or its tasks. The devboxes API reports its own errors to Sentry.

Apart from the connections that the agent and your commands make, for example to install packages, a Runner and its tasks connect to:

  • The devboxes API, for the Runner's tasks, their progress and results, and their repository.
  • The registry of the task's Docker image, and the download of devboxes-executor, the program that runs a task.
  • npm, for the Claude Code program of a task whose model account is a Claude subscription.
  • The model provider of the task's model account, and Exa for web search.

On macOS and Windows, devboxes runner listen restarts itself with DO_NOT_TRACK=1 unless DO_NOT_TRACK is set already, so that Bun, which runs the Runner, uploads no crash report.

Tasks run with settings that turn off telemetry in these tools:

ToolSetting
Bun, Turborepo, Nuxt, WranglerDO_NOT_TRACK=1
Next.jsNEXT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1
AstroASTRO_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1
GatsbyGATSBY_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1
StorybookSTORYBOOK_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1
ExpoEXPO_NO_TELEMETRY=1
FlutterFLUTTER_SUPPRESS_ANALYTICS=true
DartDASH__SUPPRESS_ANALYTICS=true
PrismaCHECKPOINT_DISABLE=1
.NETDOTNET_CLI_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT=1
npm update checknpm_config_update_notifier=false

Other tools that a task runs can still send telemetry. Give the Project a variable to set such a tool's own setting, or to turn a listed tool's telemetry on, for example NEXT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=0. The agent and the Project's commands then use your value. Tasks on capacity that devboxes manages use the same settings.

A task on a Runner searches the web with Exa, the web search built into OpenCode. The searches leave from the Runner machine's network, and Exa's daily limit for OpenCode users applies to them. Tasks on capacity that devboxes manages search through devboxes instead, so Exa's limit doesn't apply to them.
